After just a year’s run, Yap Voicemail service is on the block. Yap is the Google Voice-like voicemail-to-text service for Android and iPhone. And it’s headed out the door. I’m disappointed. I wrote a review of it five months ago and the service is still humming. So far, Yap hasn’t announced the reason for its shutdown. Where do Yap users go now? There’s of course Google Voice — but I’d rather keep my conversations off of the search conglomerate’s servers....

There isn’t a whole lot new to the design and internal specs versus last year’s model. It still has a 1.3 GHz processor and 1.5 GB of RAM. But it does add a 2MP front-facing camera with 720p video. The stats show that the Android Market had around six times fewer apps a year ago vs. today – 130,000 apps and growing. During that same period, Apple doubled its number and now has 300,000. And just for reference, Nokia’s Ovi Store is struggling at a measly 25,000. Another interesting fact from the report pointed out that developers seem to gravitate towards providing free apps, opting for other monetization methods....

Apple also fixed security vulnerabilities in iOS 10.2, which span accessibility, accounts, Find my iPhone, graphics drivers, image capture, local authentication, mail, media player, profiles, and springboard. Of note are some nasty sounding exploits that could potentially cause a denial of service from a maliciously crafted video, arbitrary code being executed from a malicious certificate, and a few holes that let people with physical access to your phone access some content without unlocking the screen....

In an interview for NBC (a fragment of which you can watch below), Cook says that the company would start making one of its Mac lines in the US starting next year. This could mean quite a bit of outsourcing from companies in the US. The interesting thing is that Foxconn, one of Apple’s main suppliers, is also set to expand its operations in the USA too. If you remember, Foxconn had some serious complaints about the way it was treating its employees, and Apple sent the Fair Labor Association to inspect the company’s plants in China....

I was writing some time ago about analyst research with component manufacturers saying that a smaller tablet from Apple could be in the works. It looks like things are going in that direction. At that time, it was estimated that the smaller iPad would make its way to the market for the winter holidays and, since the WSJ’s sources say that manufacturers were told to gear up to start mass production around September....

If you love using YouTube on your iDevice, there’s no need to panic, though. You’ll still be able to use the video-sharing service on your device via the Safari browser. Google is also working on an app that will be available in the AppStore (for free, most certainly) likely being available shortly after the release of iOS6 if not earlier. According to Apple as quoted by The Telegraph, its license for the Google App has expired, and more likely than not, is that Apple and Google are direct competitors now with Google’s Mobile Android Phones, it would be silly for Apple to allow Google flagship apps on its devices further building on Google’s brand and products....

To me, the Asus Taichi (pictured above), seems the most interesting of the new products (the full press release can be read on the4cast, here). It’s a tablet/notebook hybrid, featuring two screens and a very interesting operating concept. It’s a laptop that has two displays (one on each side of the lid). The displays are either 13.3 or 11,6 inch and have an HD resolution.
